Hangover Tips

Here are some time honored cures and prevention tips I found in our local paper:

1. Use caution: If you’re having a holiday party, designate a bartender who can keep an eye on how much everyone is drinking and avoid over-serving guest, the Distilled Spririts Council of the United States recommends. Providing food and nonalcoholic options for party goers also is a good idea.

2. Try an ounce of prevention: Eating almonds or peanut butter before drinking is thought to prevent intoxication, according to Health991.com. The site also advises that evening primrose oil and prickly pear cactus extract help prevent hangovers.

Relief For Dry Eyes

Computer usage is hard on our eyes. If you sit at your computer for any length of time you will often find yourself feeling my eyes are dry. I found these valuable tips in an article from our local paper on how to have healthy eyes.

Readjust your computer so that your eyes look down. Looking down on the screen helps eliminate glare. Adjust the brightness and contrast to increase readability.

Refocus your eyes on something far away for about 30 seconds every 15 minutes.

Exercises For Improving Balance

I just saw this great tip in Parade Magazine about improving your balance through balance exercise. My yoga teacher always told me balance is something that has to be practiced otherwise you will lose some of your ability to balance. Now this article quotes research that suggests improving your balance is one the best ways to prevent fractures. How about that. Apparently, doctors found in a large scale study done in Sweden that impaired balance tripled risk of hip fractures in older patients. It also doubled the risk of other fractures. The researchers calculated that 37% of all hip fractues could be prevented if patients had better balance.

How To Stop A Nosebleed

There seems to be an endless stream of suggestions on how to stop a nosebleed but I came across one that I had not heard before and the explanation for why it works is completely logical. You stop the nosebleed by pressing keys or a cold butter knife to the back of the person’s neck. The explanation as to why this works is because of the mammalian dive reflex. Cold hits the nerves in the neck, causing the blood vessels to constrict. Your pulse will also slow a bit too.

How To Get Allergy Relief With Natural Remedies

Written by admin on Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 in Allergies, Health Care, Home Remedies.

Seasonal allergies afflict many Americans, with symptoms occurring anywhere from early spring through late November. Our immune system’s over reaction to pollens, grass, airborne fungi, animal hair and even some kinds of foods. Our environment has become more and more toxic which causes our immune system to be compromised. Runny noses, watery eyes and sneezing are the result of our body fighting back the allergen by producing an excess of inflammatory chemicals, such as histamine. Often these symptoms create other problems such as sinus infection, throat infections and ear infections which can be extremely painful and debilitating.
