Quick Money Scams

No one likes to be scammed but sometimes we want to believe and become vulnerable. Here are some elements you can look for if you think someone is trying to scam you:

1. It must be kept a secret.

2. You have to wire money quickly.

So here are a few rules to avoid being scammed:

1. Never wire money to anyone

2. Never keep a secret, ask someone to help you verify the facts.3. Call the BBB (Better Business Bureau) first to check out any offers.

Here are some of the latest scams reported by our local paper:

Publisher Clearinghouse - The real Publishers Clearinghouse Sweepstakes is not a scam. They may try to get you to take a magazine, though the real Sweepstakes does not do what the fake one does – ask you to send money. It has been reported that consumers have received letters from “Publishers Clearinghouse” announcing they are the lucky winners of $675,000. With the letter, you get a check for $4764.13 to pay for “applicable processing fees in order to get your prize money. You are required to call a “claims” agent, deposit the check and send them the processing fees in order to get your prize money. The letter also states they are regulated by these “sound alike”, agencies the “Free Trade Commission” and the “Financial Services Regulatory Commission of USA and Canada,” all bogus agencies. And it must be kept secret.

Secret shopper scam - Consumers around the country have been receiving a check for $3,895 and they are told they have been seleted to be a consumer service evaluator of selected retail stores and restaurants. However, the first assignment is to pose as a Money Gram/Western Union customer, evaluating the local transfer facility. You must send a money gram to one of the training agents in order to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the payment system. Your’re instructed to deposit the check, fill out an accceptance form and fax it to your assigned agent. Then two days later you are to withdraw the full amount, go to the Money Gram or Western Union location and make the transfer. Of course, you must keep all this confidential.

Emergency scam - Though the emergency scam or sometimes called “grandparent scam” has been around for a long time it is regaining popularity. The grandparent receives a phone call from someone claiming to be a grandchild in trouble. The child says they need money but please don’t tell their parents. The victim is instructed to send money by a money transfer company.
