Our paper had a little blurb from Drs. Mike Roizen and Mehmet Oz and I thought it would be helpful. You have probably heard about the relationship between exercise and depression – exercise can help lessen depression. Well, it turns out that your mood can lift with as little as 30 minutes of exercise.

Here is what the article said to do: Walk at a moderate pace, 60 percent to 70 percent of your maximum heart rate for 30 minutes. For the average 55-year old, that’s about 100 heartbeats per minute.

In a study comparing walkers with people who were inactive for 30 minutes, the walkers all got relief from depressive symptoms, including confusion, anger, distress and fatigue. And both groups suffered from major depression.

I would just add one thing. While you are walking be aware of your surroundings. For one reason it will help you stay safe. Being aware of your surroundings is one of the first rules of self defense. You are more likely to spot suspicious happenings if you are paying attention. The other reason is it will keep you from dwelling on problems that might be bothering you. You don’t want to lift your mood only to get down again.
