How to Reduce Stress Naturally

Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Mike Roizen recently published an article titled “Nature’s Best Stress Busters.” Here are their suggestions on how to relax and reduce stress:

Tighten your muscles: Then let them relax. By doing this muscle by muscle, you can help push the physical stress that is stored in your body out of your body. Start with your feet. Tense the muscles for about ten to fifteen seconds and then relax them. Then move up your body, doing the same with each muscle group (calf muscles, thigh muscles etc.).

Deep breathing: Deep breathing helps modify the messages sent from your body to the brain via the vagus nerve, the longest nerve coming directly from your brain. Relearn how to deep breathe by lying down, putting your finger on your belly button and making it move away from the floor when you inhale. You want to make your stomach rise as you fill it up with air. Deep breathing starts from your stomach not your chest.

Yoga Poses: Try a few yoga poses. Focus your mind on the movement you’re doing or holding. This frees your body and helps you free your mind to allow ideas to pass through it without attachment. Listen to relaxing music – Dr. Oz did not mention this one but I think it really helps reduce stress. When I am working on my computer, I listen to ocean sounds or nature sounds. If you have trouble downloading nature sounds just go to Grooveshark.com and create a playlist of soothing music.
