Yeast Overgrowth
I have always had a sweet tooth and sometimes I really do crave sugary things. I saw this post from Dr. Mehmet Oz on Oprah’s site and I thought it was worth summarizing here. So here is what Dr. Oz is saying in a nut shell.
Dr. Oz says that knowing what’s causing your sugar cravings can help you overcome them. He says there are basically three types:
Type I he calls “Feed me now, or I’ll kill you” - Dr. Oz says this type of sugar craving usually reflects low blood sugar. Eating sugar will help for the first few minutes but makes things worse in the long term. I know if my blood sugar gets too low, I can’t get enough food in me to feel full and I feel kind of weak the rest of the day.
Dr. Oz’s solution is to suck on a Tic Tac or two and eat more protein and fewer sweets to keep your blood sugar stable. Also, multiple small meals instead of three big ones decrease cravings. This coincides with what Dr. Atkins says about combating hypoglycemia. He (Atkins) advocates high protein, low carbs and low sugar. I have found my craving for sweets decreased after starting to follow a modified Atkins diet and managed to lose five pounds.
Type 2 - “I’d really like a Twinkie” Dr. Oz says you feel alright but find yourself going through your cabinets looking for sweets. To break the craving he suggests something from the holistic side of medicine. Holistic docs say—without great evidence, yet there have been some successful treatments—this need for something sweet could come from yeast overgrowth in the gut and that treating it with probiotics (healthy bacteria) can help.
Type 3 - “It’s my period, and I’m depressed” Yes, I have experienced this many times. Dr. Oz says that this particular kind of craving is caused by low levels of serotonin—the “happiness molecule”—around your period can cause you to crave carbs. His suggestion for breaking the pattern is to eat dark chocolate (not a whole storeful; try an ounce or so) and it will supply a natural antidepressant called PEA, plus the carbs you crave. IIn non-hormonal times he suggests going for a walk or drinking some water. According to Oz much of the “I want to eat even when I am not really hungry” feeling stems from lack of sleep (walking can help wake you up), lack of sex or lack of water.
