Good SAT Scores

Here are some tips given by a high school student who recently took the test:

Do a little preparation every day - Doesn’t matter if you are a freshman, sophomore or junior, register on www.collegeboard.com to receive the “official SAT question of the day” via e-mail. Practice question comes from previous tests and takes only two minutes to complete. You’ll receive detailed explanations for each answer.

Get The Official SAT Study Guide immediately - Has 10 previous SAT exams, complete with answers and explanations for the questions. Helps you get a feel for what kinds of questions are on the SAT and what kind of answers to look for.

Keep taking the test to boost your scores - Take the SAT as a 10th or 11th grader so you can get practice. After a few times you will feel comfortable taking the test and you can choose to send only your highest scores.

Consider the ACT - If you don’t like the SAT try the ACT. The SAT jumps from math to reading to writing to math but the ACT you do all of one subject area at a time. You also do not get penalized for wrong answers.

Read a whole lot - The SAT requires you to write a timed essay. You will score high on the writing portion if you back your claim with a literary, historical, or current-events example. Be knowledgeable about important events, authors and national issues to write a strong essay. Read online news or the daily newspaper. Reading will also help expand your vocabulary.

Check to see if you must take SAT subject tests - Check to see if the colleges you are applying to require these subject tests, and choose subject tests that reflect your best classes in school. Take the SAT subject tests as soon as you finish the class in school, while the material is still fresh.
