Computers are the worst using as much as 85% of their power for a PC that is always on. How is it electronic devices are using power when they are turned off? Well, it turns out they don’t actually turn off. Many of them go into a standby mode which causes them to continue to use power. It is wasted energy which is bad for the enviornment and wasted money which is bad for the pocketbook.
If you want to save money and energy unplug these devices when you are not using them. Also take chargers out of the wall when they are not charging the device. When your device is done charging, the charger is still using 30% of its power when plugged into the wall. I always thought I was doing so great using rechargeable batteries but I always left the charger plugged in.
The problem I have with unplugging my charger is that it tends to get lost when not plugged in. Also unplugging other devices can be difficult. The article though had a great solution that I really liked. They suggested buying a SmartStrip which is a power strip and surge protector that automatically shuts off power to devices that are shut down. Apparently, SmartStrips are designed to be used with devices that operate in cluster i.e. your computer,printer,scanner etc.
For future purchases you can save energy and money by looking for products with Energy Star logo, which certifies that the components use less than 1 watt of power when turned off. Also, if you remember to unplug your charger rechargeable batteries are a great choice. The article did a cost comparison – the rechargeable battery cost $34.00 (including cost of electricity to recharge) and disposable AA batteries at 30 cents apiece cost $300.00
