How to Save Dollars on Your Homeowners Insurance Rates

Written by admin on October 5th, 2009 in Insurance.

Homeowners Insurance Coverage

Your homeowners insurance premium is rated up or down depending on how you score on certain factors. Here are some of the factors homeowners insurance companies use to calculate your rate.

1. Condition of your home
Insurance companies calculate how much wear-and-tear there has been on your home when figuring your payment. The insurance company will consider how good a condition your roof is in, if there is any damage from termites, and the if your electrical system is up to code. New homes are usually in better shape than older homes, you can get up to a fifteen percent discount on your premium if your home is brand new.

How To Don’t Worry Be Happy

Written by admin on May 7th, 2009 in Good Mental Health.

Happiness Research

A recent study by the University of Chicago’s National Opinion Research Center finds the percent of Americans reporting they are “not too happy,” to be the highest percentage in the survey since 1972. Though the remainder of the respondents to the General Social Survey, which was released in February of this year, said they were “very happy” (32 percent) or “pretty happy” (54 percent).

“There’s an increase of discontent, uncertainty, anxiety and anger that’s a product of changes in the economy” says W. Doyle Gentry, author of Happiness for Dummies. But, Gentry also says “a rise in the number of people who describe themselves as “not very happy” does not mean they are necessarily unhappy people.

Recipe Substitutions

Published recipes often call for ingredients you may want to avoid. I found these suggestion for healthy substitutions in our paper:

Substitute wine, balsamic vinegar or fruit juice for oil based marinades.

Substitute mustard or low-sodium soy sauce for soy sauce.

Substitute herbs, vinegar or lemon juice for table salt. I also use sea salt instead of regular salt.

Substitute garlic or onion powder for garlic or onion salt.

Substitute two egg whites for one egg.

Substitute fat-free milk-based soups, potato flakes, pureed potato or carrot for cream of mushroom or other creamed soups.
