Yoga Does Not Have To Hurt

As soon as I say Yoga, you picture a beautiful, slim young woman in a tight fitting, leotard standing on her head with her legs in the full lotus position. If you don’t what the full lotus position is don’t worry, you probably wouldn’t like it any way. Yoga has fabulous benefits such as improved posture, more flexible muscles which makes you less prone to injury, reduced tension throughout your body and respitory benefits. Yet, the practice of Yoga always sounds time-consuming and looks painful.

There are a zillion varities of Yoga but the most commonly practiced is Hatha Yoga. It is one the more slow-placed types of yoga. Yoga does not have to be hard or time consuming. I have a combination Yoga and Pilates DVD that I do only twice a week. It takes me about 20 minutes to complete. Even though I only spend a little time doing Yoga, I can tell I am benefiting from it. My posture is better and my muscles are more flexible. People tell me I look like I have lost weight, even though I haven’t.

So here is what you need to do. The key is to look for Yoga for beginners. I find classes to be too expensive and incovenient so I would reccommend looking for a DVD on Yoga for beginners. Also look for DVD’s that include modifications for beginners. There are many poses that can modified so a beginner can perform them. You still get the benefits from the pose even though you are not doing it exactly the way it is shown. You can work up to doing the pose without modifications or just stay with the modified way but you always benefit physically and mentally.

The way I found mine was to look online and read the reviews that people wrote. You will also find a comprehensive description of what is on the DVD and may even be able to watch a clip. If your concerned about time check out how long each segment of the DVD lasts. Next see if you can find a used version of the DVD. I selected my Yoga DVD and went on Amazon.com and found it used. If the DVD’s are really cheap you may want to order a couple and try them out and see what you like best. The one I use is Denise Austin’s Mat Workout Based On The Work Of J.H. Pilates. It has a Pilates workout and a combinaton Yoga/Pilates workout.
