Hummingbird Food Sugar Ratio
I love to see the hummingbirds when they come. They are great entertainment. I have had problems though with bees and wasps at my feeder. I saw an article about how to get rid of bees and wasps and wanted to pass on the information. I have also had problems with racoons drinking all the sugar water out of the feeder at night.
If you are having problems with bees and wasps at your hummingbird feeder you might have a leak in your feeder. Bees and wasps can not reach the sugar water in the hummingbird feeder because their probsicis are not long enough. If they are hanging around your hummingbird feeder you have a leak. The bottom might not be screwed on properly or wind has blown sugar water on to the top. If the feeder is old, the seals may have worn thin. The article I read advised if your hummingbird feeder is old you should replace it with a new hummingbird feeder and here is what you should look for in a feeder:
Your hummingbird feeder should not have any yellow parts. Some experts say the color yellow attracts bees.
There is adequate distance between the tube opening and the water level.
The parts screw together tightly.
Other techniques to get rid of wasps and bees:
1. Hang the feeders in the shade; bees prefer to feed in the sun. Hummingbirds don’t care.
2. Reduce the sugar content. Bees and waps like a high sugar concentration. Hummingbirds are just as happy with a five to one ratio of water to sugar as they are with the recommended four to one ratio.
3. Move the feeder, even if it is just a few feet. Hummers willl find the new location quickly. Bees and wasps may not.
